Windows only provides
Paint the default application for editing images. You must already know that his ability is very limited and unreliable to the needs of even the basic level editing. Another alternative that can be counted on to edit with good skills but free is
GIMP.
Now
GIMP 2.7.4 was released with minor improvements and bugfixes. Most improvements are related to user interface and usability, see here for detailed list of changes. Depending on amount of bugs we get reports on this could be the last version before 2.8 release candidates and 2.8 itself. The other good news is that between 2.7.3 and 2.7.4 Michael Natterer considerably improved GTK+ for Mac, so GIMP is finally going to be first class citizen on that platform.
New versions of
GEGL and
BABL was released too. Changes in babl are mostly improvements of the existing feature set, but GEGL got operations ported from GIMP filters by Robert Sasu during Google Summer of Code 2011, as well as some new operations written by the team.
GIMP stands for
GNU Image Manipulation Program, an image manipulation application that has support for most operating systems today. Originally, GIMP was developed specifically for the X11 desktop which runs on Unix platforms. But over time and further development of this application, also made for other platforms such as Windows, Sun OpenSolaris, FreeBSD, and Mac OS X.
The application of this alternative is right for novice graphic designers, even though an expert because of the features and capabilities not inferior to Photoshop or other graphics applications. For the novice user, do not worry it's a pain, because the guide is included on the official website is quite comprehensive, ranging from documentation to the tutorial. If you are diligent surf the internet, there are many GIMP user community making it easier for you who want to learn more.
Supported Platforms :
- GNU/Linux (i386, PPC)
- Microsoft Windows (XP, Vista)
- Mac OS X
- Sun OpenSolaris
- FreeBSD
