VMDK (Virtual Machine Disk) is a file format used for virtual appliances developed for VMware products. The format is a container for virtual hard disk drives to be used in virtual machines like VMware Workstation or Virtualbox. VMDK is an open format.
Whereas, VHD (Virtual Hard Disk) is a file format which represents a virtual hard disk drive (HDD). It may contain what is found on a physical HDD, such as disk partitions and a file system, which in turn can contain files and folders. It is typically used as the hard disk of a virtual machine.
If you want to move VMWare's VMDK format into the Microsoft's VHD format, you can use a 2Tware Convert VHD 1.0.4. The utility will directly convert VMDK to VHD file. This is a sector by sector copy operation from one format to the other and the source file remains unaltered.
